Adopting Dogs

The Lambeek family was looking for a friend for their dog, Toby. They had found out about a charity event at east coast park where different dog shelters would come to the big splash and showcase some of their dogs. They came across a fenced area from one of the shelters, which contained 3 small puppies. One of which had bad scars on its body. They asked the representative volunteer about the small black puppy. She said that it was found at sand dunes near Tampines, and she was found with severe maggot infestations. The Family imediately fell in love with the sturdy little puppy, whos name was Charcoal. They questioned if this dog would be a suitable playmate for Toby, as it looked as if it would grow to be quite big, and Toby was small for his size. They agreed to take her for a week trial. After a week they had already formed quite a strong bond with Charcoal and couldn’t give up on her, so they signed the papers and she was all theirs. They changed her name to Maisy.

This story is a good example of helping animals that are really in the need of it.

An expert’s knowledge was certainly needed, therefore I spoke with Christine, a volunteer from Causes for Animals Singapore (CAS) she said that the local society in Singapore have a superstition that black dogs are a bad omen, and it would ensue a death in the family. Most locally found dogs are cross bred, meaning that it could be a mix of many different breeds of dogs, therefore the exact breeds of a cross-bred dog can be indeterminable. So many dogs are found on the streets every year, so why not help one out and give it a loving home to feel safe in. Of course some dogs may have had horrific memories of humans attacking them or hurting them, which might affect their behavior in a bad way. The dog might be nervous around people at first, but later they will warm up to people.

Being a dog owner can have a lot of advantages, for example people who own dogs are much happier, and are less likely to suffer from depression than people who have no pets. This is because touching someone, produces Oxytocin, the love hormone. It is produced by touch and love, this gives someone good energy, and they feel loved. So, what is it that dog shelters actually do? They go out in search of animals in distress, or they might get a call from anyone that a kitten was found in an industrial tube (true story) or a lost, whining and starving puppy was sighted lying at the side of a path. Sari Lambeek, mother of the Lambeek family, says that she notices a slight difference in behavior between the two dogs that she owns (one pedigree, one cross-bred), her cross-bred dog, Maisy has been nervous around humans, especially big men, for 3 weeks, and for Toby, the dog that they got from a very young age, took no time at all to warm up to them.

Dog shelters will always be looking for the oppurtunity to give a dog/cat a secon chance at life. It is also a possibility to sponsor a dog at a dog shelter. This provides money to give that dog food and nicer beds and toys. Many animal shelters have websites, where background stories and images can be viewed, and that is where donating, and sponsoring can be done. Volunteering at your local dog shelter can also greatly help the dogs. Some things that volunteers do at dogs shelters are walk the dogs, feed the dogs, play with the dogs, wash the dogs, and more, and belive me, it is fun. So drop the search for a breeder, and find a local dog shelter instead and find a trusty companion that would appreciate your love and care.

  1. I think adopting dogs has a lot of advantages. I liked that you talk about this, about how dogs need our love and services and it's amazing how people help all the time dogs or cats in need that are hurt or that need food, refugee, etc.

  2. I really liked that you prefer adopting dogs than buying them. It was a nice thing to write about and I liked that you never got out of the point and always talked about what it is like adopting dogs. I also liked that you said how it will likely be difficult for the dog to adapt to their new home.

  3. Hey Caspar,
I really liked your story! It's really awesome that the Lambeek family was so nice to actually adopt Maisy. It's kind of sad, but here in Mexico, there are lots of street dogs. Owners don't measure the amounts of puppies a dog can have, and if they think there are too many they would just leave them on the streets. But don't get me wrong, it's just a few of them who do that. Keep up the good work!

  4. It's better to adopt than to buy from my point of view, there is no point in breeding when there are already thousands of dogs waiting to be adopted. Dogs and cats, it doesn't matter wether they're from the streets or pedigree, they're still dogs and cats. I myself have a street dog. My brother found it as a puppy starving on the street, and we've now had it for 6 months. I agree with your way of seeing this.

  5. I agree that adopting dogs is better that buying them. I think that the Lambeek family are very nice by adopting Maisy and that it have many advantages. I also think that people should adopt dogs because they give them a home, and some of those dogs have being on the streets for days or weeks.

  6. Hey Caspar,
I agree a lot with what you said about adopting dogs because I also think that adopting dogs is better than buying in many ways. Lambeek family is very nice by adopting Maisy they did a change. They helped a dog meaning that they did a change and that is something the world needs.I really agree with the way you think and see this.

  9. I agree and disagree. I agree because if you see a dog that looks really ugly in the street and it is miserable it is very bad for you to not help that dog because it is a living thing. I disagree because people most of the time they adopt a dog it only takes one week for them to stop caring about it or just have no more time or just don't caring or you have to pay a huge or just a little amount of money you don't want to expend in that.

  10. I agree because sometimes people just adopt a dog with the only purpose to shut-up their child that wants one. But in the few week people stop thinking about their dog and stop caring for it, and just spending their money in it's food.

  11. I agree that you should adopt dogs rather than buying one. I really lied that the Lambeek family adopted Maisy. When you adopt a dog a lot of people would follow your example. If a lot of people adopted a dog we could finish with the street dogs. That would benefit the community. I would like to adopt a lot of dogs so they don't suffer.

  12. I agree with you. Adopting dogs is much better. They are millions of dogs with no home that die every single day. Why breed or buy one if they are many more out there with no family. We as humans, have our family and friends... but dogs only have us. If we don't take care of them, no one will. Adopting is the best decision you could take. Having a dog is more than having a pet, is having another member of your family.

  13. I am really happy to see someone who really cares about adopting dogs. I agree with this. I really think that there are a lot of dogs in the streets. So adopting dogs can help you, the owner, and the dog. You can have many advantages and the dog can be safer tan being in the streets. Adopting a dog really helps a lot of dogs, they need our help. I would like to adopt a dog but few months ago I lost my dog so maybe in the future I will adopt one. Hope you have a great day. Thank you!

  14. I find this article really interesting and realistic, and I specially liked it because I have adopted two dogs, and I know that adopting a dog is sometimes better than buying one. This article is really complete, because it has a story, some thoughts from you, and professional opinions.

  15. I agree that adopting dogs is better than buing one, why buying a dog if there are millions of them with no home and for free, I would really like to adopt a dog but I already have one and I actually did not buy it but a friend of my mom gift it to her, at first she wanted the dog for herself but the dog ate all her Italian patio furniture and she gift it to us.

  16. I really agree with adopting dogs. I agree because if you adopt dogs then less dogs will be in the street and you will help an animal. Maybe someday I will adopt one dog and have it with me forever. There are a lot of dogs in the streets dying with no home and some people actually buy dogs I really don't think this is correct.

  17. Dear Casper,
I agree with adopting dogs. I agree because theres going to be less dogs in the street. Many people buy dogs because they think thats the best it is good to buy dogs but better to adopt. People think that dogs that you buy are the nice and clean ones but every dogs is in good condition not only because you adopt a dog means that is a bad dog.

  18. I agree that you should adopt dogs instead of buying one. Because less dogs are in the streets so that means that less dogs die. Also you save a lot of money by not buying a dog so you can use that money to feed the dog or buy him toys to play with or even a bed. Someday I will adopt a dog because I love dog, but what about you...

  19. Dear Casper,
I think that you made good points by clarifying that someone with a dog has a better life that someone who doesn't. Caring about an animal is like caring for a person, he/she gives you love, care and happiness. The person who take care of their pets are the people who have a better life. I loved your story, the Lambeek family were very appreciative to adopt Maisy and helping her get rid of her sickness, the maggot infestations. Here in Mexico there is a lot of homeless dogs, cats and all types of animals. Many people try to rescue them but most of the population just leave them or torture them. Its horrible. The organizations who help this poor animals really make a difference. They feed them, they care for them, give them love and provides them a good family where they can be treated differently. There is also a big problem of selling puppies. Many people go to parks and bring all the puppies they can so people can buy them, even in the streets people try to sell them! Have you ever seen Mexican people clean your car glass? Many of those people try to sell the poor puppies! Well, what I'm trying to say is that adopting dogs is very important because they are living things that are part of our world.

  20. Dear Casper,
I personally think that this article is really good by the fact that you specified the ways that you can adopt a dog. This article also shows us the different ways that you can help street dogs to get a better life which is adopting them. I also liked that you wrote that the Lambeek family was looking for a friend for their dog, Toby. This is a really good example by the fact that this promotes people to do the same thibg but intstead of bying a dog people can adopt them.
